hello, many thanks for setting up this benchmark (i'm sure i'll come back to it once i have more time.)

i'd be curious how orql would fare for SELECT statements in comparison to the others. would you consider including it despite its early "playground" stage?

I can add it to the line up, thought there is the obvious problematic of it being Oracle-first? If you feel it should reasonably handle most of the cases happy to add it in with some caveats specified in there.

yes, it's oracle-first/-only. i fear there's still tons of work left to support "most of the happy cases." (right now orql supports only select statements.) on the other hand, a cargo run --example dump <path-to-gretel-select.txt> in orql reports some invalid statements while accepting many. i'll have a look at how to add a benchmark myself later. thanks for your quick feedback so far.

Hi @xitep, orql has been added to the benchmark! Here's a summary of the results.

Correctness (test corpus scraped from sqlparser-rs, ground truth: libpg_query):

The TPC-H false positive is the same non-standard statement that sqlparser-rs and polyglot-sql also misaccept. The near-zero false-positive rate across the board is a good sign, orql is strict and honest about what it doesn't support. Round-trip and fidelity are N/A since no pretty-printer is exposed.

Performance on real-world SELECT statements (Spider + Gretel, parser::iter API):

62.3% of the corpus parses successfully; the remaining 37.7% uses PG-specific syntax not present in Oracle SQL and is silently skipped by iter. INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE are 0% as expected (SELECT-only), so those table entries in the README are tagged ⚠️ with a note that they reflect iteration overhead, not actual parsing.

One implementation note: the benchmark uses orql::parser::iter rather than parser::parse — the latter aborts the whole batch on the first unsupported statement, which just measures how quickly it gives up. The iterator gives meaningful throughput numbers for what orql can actually handle.

I think I should create a few documents where people can contribute SQL statements for the various dialects, and start building this benchmark up. Do you know of any datasets which I am not already including?

as long as the iterator is advanced until delivering None (ie. reaching the end of the input stream) you did exactly the right thing. (the iterator is the kind of "real world" usage.)

upon an erroneous statement the iterator advances to the next semicolon and tries to parse from there the next statement. (in my own benchmarks the iterator is slightly slower than the parse method due to the lazy bookkeeping.) more interesting though might be using the iter_with_(location/metadata); that's probably going to be about 30% slower (according to my own benchmarks; the AST is going to be a slightly bigger and, thus, having impact on cpu caches. further tracking comments costs something.)

there's also a to_sql_string which i recently added and should serialise an AST into SQL for a syntax round-trip. just in case you'd like to explore a bit more.

many thanks for the effort @LucaCappelletti94! 🙇 (despite the rather ugly code base, i'm really glad to see that orql (so far) does OK in terms of performance. this surely gives me some new motivation.)

that's exactly my own problem as well :( (in part i use chatgpt to generate some, but mostly real-world, proprietary queries from my company project which i'm not allowed to share though :/)
